Bruce's Stone
Located within the idyllic Galloway Forest Park north of Newton Stewart is a large shaped boulder on a hillside overlooking waters of Loch Trool. This is Bruce's Stone, marking the site of the Battle of Trool in 1307, which saw Robert Bruce defeat an English force by clever use of what we would now call guerilla tactics.
Tradition says that Bruce rested against the stone after the battle, a fact commemorated by an inscription which seems to take up most of the boulder's surface.
